A California paycheck carries three state deductions: state income tax across nine brackets from 1% to 12.3% (13.3% above $1 million), State Disability Insurance at 1.3% of every dollar of wages, and nothing else from cities, because California has no local income taxes. Add federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and California workers face the highest combined withholding of any large state.

How California tax works on a paycheck
California taxes wages with its own brackets, its own (small) standard deduction and an exemption credit rather than a deduction: $153 is subtracted from the tax itself, not from income. Employers withhold using the EDD's Method B exact-calculation tables and your Form DE 4. The annual result is what this page shows. The extra 1% "mental health services" tax applies to taxable income over $1,000,000, giving the 13.3% top rate.
State Disability Insurance (SDI) is the deduction people forget. It funds disability and Paid Family Leave benefits, it is withheld at 1.3% in 2026, and since 2024 it applies to all wages with no cap: a $300,000 earner pays $3,900. It is deductible on a federal itemized return as a state tax. California has no city or county income tax. San Francisco's payroll expense tax is paid by employers.
Head-of-household filers use their own California schedule, which this version approximates with the single schedule and the $11,080 standard deduction. Married filing jointly uses the joint schedule. 401(k), HSA and Section 125 health premiums reduce California taxable wages as they do federal wages.

Federal deductions on every US paycheck
Three federal amounts come out of every paycheck in every state. Federal income tax depends on your W-4: filing status, dependents, other income and any extra withholding. For 2026 the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and the brackets run from 10% to 37%. Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026, then stops. Medicare takes 1.45% with no cap, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000 in the year. Before tax health premiums, HSA and FSA contributions reduce all three. A traditional 401(k) reduces income tax but not Social Security or Medicare.
The words on this page, in plain English
- Take-home pay
- The money that lands in your bank account after taxes and deductions. Also called net pay.
- Gross pay
- Your pay before anything is taken out. The salary in your job offer is gross pay.
- W-4
- The form you fill in when you start a job. It tells your employer how much federal tax to hold back from each paycheck.
- Filing status
- How you file your tax return: single, married filing jointly, or head of household (a single parent, usually). It changes your tax brackets.
- Standard deduction
- A chunk of your income the IRS does not tax at all. In 2026 it is $16,100 for a single person. The calculator takes it off before working out tax.
- Tax bracket
- Income is taxed in slices. The first slice is taxed at 10%, the next at 12%, and so on. Only the money inside a slice is taxed at that rate, so moving into a higher bracket never cuts your total pay.
- Social Security and Medicare (FICA)
- Two flat taxes on wages: 6.2% for Social Security (it stops after $184,500 of pay in 2026) and 1.45% for Medicare. Your employer pays the same amounts on top.
- Before tax deduction
- Money taken out of your pay before tax is worked out, such as a 401(k) contribution or health insurance premium. It lowers your tax.
- 401(k)
- A retirement savings plan through your employer. A traditional 401(k) is taken before income tax. A Roth 401(k) is taken after.
- Pay period
- How often you are paid. Every two weeks means 26 paychecks a year. Twice a month means 24. Monthly means 12.
