Federal deductions on every US paycheck

Three federal amounts come out of every paycheck in every state. Federal income tax depends on your W-4: filing status, dependents, other income and any extra withholding. For 2026 the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers and $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and the brackets run from 10% to 37%. Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026, then stops. Medicare takes 1.45% with no cap, plus 0.9% on wages above $200,000 in the year. Before tax health premiums, HSA and FSA contributions reduce all three. A traditional 401(k) reduces income tax but not Social Security or Medicare.

The words on this page, in plain English

Take-home pay
The money that lands in your bank account after taxes and deductions. Also called net pay.
Gross pay
Your pay before anything is taken out. The salary in your job offer is gross pay.
W-4
The form you fill in when you start a job. It tells your employer how much federal tax to hold back from each paycheck.
Filing status
How you file your tax return: single, married filing jointly, or head of household (a single parent, usually). It changes your tax brackets.
Standard deduction
A chunk of your income the IRS does not tax at all. In 2026 it is $16,100 for a single person. The calculator takes it off before working out tax.
Tax bracket
Income is taxed in slices. The first slice is taxed at 10%, the next at 12%, and so on. Only the money inside a slice is taxed at that rate, so moving into a higher bracket never cuts your total pay.
Social Security and Medicare (FICA)
Two flat taxes on wages: 6.2% for Social Security (it stops after $184,500 of pay in 2026) and 1.45% for Medicare. Your employer pays the same amounts on top.
Before tax deduction
Money taken out of your pay before tax is worked out, such as a 401(k) contribution or health insurance premium. It lowers your tax.
401(k)
A retirement savings plan through your employer. A traditional 401(k) is taken before income tax. A Roth 401(k) is taken after.
Pay period
How often you are paid. Every two weeks means 26 paychecks a year. Twice a month means 24. Monthly means 12.

How much is $75,000 after taxes in Nebraska in 2026?

About $59,060 a year, or $2,271.52 every two weeks, for a single filer with no deductions taken before tax: federal tax $7,670.00, Social Security and Medicare $5,737.50, Nebraska tax $2,532.96.

About $48,540 a year for a single filer, which is $1,866.91 per paycheck when paid every two weeks. The total tax rate is 19.1% of gross pay.

Why is my Nebraska paycheck different from this estimate?

Your employer withholds using the IRS Publication 15-T tables and your W-4 entries, and Nebraska's own withholding tables spread your expected yearly tax across paychecks. The yearly total should land close to this estimate. A single paycheck can differ by a few dollars, more if you have other income or claim credits on your W-4.
